Our Extracurricular Programs

Room to Grow, Explore and Discover

Our Extracurricular Team offers a diverse and extensive range of activities beyond the classroom. At both campuses, children and young people can choose from a wide variety of activities and clubs, allowing them to develop their interests, discover new passions, try out new things and strengthen their individual skills in engaging and purposeful ways. Our programme extends well beyond clubs and activities. School sports teams provide opportunities for athletic development and competition, our very own music school inspires students to make music, and the Family Club offers a varied programme of activities for the whole family at weekends. In this way, German School Shanghai remains a vibrant place for learning, discovery and personal growth – long after lessons have finished. Our holistic approach also includes professional counselling and prevention services. School social work supports students with issues such as violence and bullying prevention, offers guidance with everyday concerns and provides assistance in acute crisis situations. Where necessary, the team also helps students access further psychological support.

School Social Work and Support Services

Our daily work focuses on making German School Shanghai a safe, supportive and welcoming place to learn and grow. We work proactively to identify challenges at an early stage and respond to students' needs with appropriate support.

School Sports Teams

Our school teams currently compete in football, swimming, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and artistic gymnastics. They give students the opportunity to develop their athletic skills and gain valuable experience in competitions. Whether training for performance or simply enjoying sport together, our teams place equal emphasis on enjoyment, teamwork and athletic development.

Atelier Time – Space for Initiative and Collaboration

Atelier Time gives children and young people the freedom to shape their school day through creative, active and collaborative activities. Teachers are not the only ones who lead the sessions: students can also contribute their own ideas and organise ateliers for their peers. This creates a vibrant space for connection, shared responsibility and collaboration – from kindergarten and primary school through to secondary school.

Afternoon Club – Starting in Kindergarten

The Afternoon Club complements our full-day programme for children in the regular kindergarten groups and primary school students who wish to take part in additional activities. The programme changes daily and includes swimming lessons, yoga, playful language learning and creative projects. All activities, including homework supervision, can be booked for individual days or the entire week for an additional fee.

Official Youth Development Partner of Borussia Dortmund

From preschool onwards, young football enthusiasts have the opportunity to train according to the philosophy of Borussia Dortmund (BVB), supported by a professional coaching team. They can also take part in international league competitions in Shanghai and tournaments beyond the city.

Activities for the Whole Family

There's plenty happening on Saturdays, too! Our varied weekend programme at the Family Club brings learning, exercise and fun together for the whole family. Activities include swimming lessons, football, ballet, parkour, jiu-jitsu and many more. The paid programme is open to children aged three and above. Families can conveniently book activities twice a year through the parent portal.

Sport, Creativity and Fun During the Holidays

Our holiday camps, generally running on a weekly basis, offer children aged three and above and young people a varied programme of sports, creative activities, excursions and plenty of holiday fun – with meals included, of course. Depending on demand, these camps are offered at our campuses for an additional fee, giving children memorable experiences throughout the school holidays. We also offer exclusive football camps in cooperation with Borussia Dortmund, as well as swimming camps led by our professional coaching team.

Our Full-Day Programme

Our extracurricular activities are an integral part of our full-day programme. Children can learn, explore their interests and develop their skills together from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, with optional care until 5:00 pm. Secondary school students can remain at school until 6:30 pm.
