Our Library
Asia’s Largest Collection of German-Language Literature
With more than 46,000 items across our two campuses, German School Shanghai is home to the largest German-language library collection in Asia, with new titles added every year. From picture books for our youngest readers and exam preparation materials for graduating students to novels and travel guides for parents, our collection has something for every age and interest. And there’s more to discover: our libraries feature quiet study rooms, a reading garden and even a small theatre. Explore the highlights of our libraries at both DSS campuses below!
Books, Audiobooks, Digital Lending and More
Our library offers an extensive range of media. Alongside printed books and e-books, newspapers and magazines in print and digital formats, interactive learning resources, audiobooks and the Polylino picture-book app, our collection includes audiovisual media such as CDs, DVDs and Tonies. Students and families can also access databases, subject-specific platforms, board games, role-playing games and a wide range of digital media through our online lending service, made possible by our partnership with the Goethe-Institut.
Comfortable Spaces for Every Age
Comfortable reading benches and sofas invite visitors to browse and discover our collection. Our sound-insulated study rooms offer a quiet environment for learning and independent work. For our youngest visitors, books and other resources are easy to reach, neatly arranged in low, clearly organised drawers and book boxes.
Inspiring Language and Reading Activities
Read, Discover and Take Part
From kindergarten to secondary school, children explore books, audiobooks and digital media in our libraries. Through language games and activities as library scouts, they tell stories, sort and organise books, and carry out research. These experiences help them develop their language and media skills, a sense of responsibility and a systematic approach to their work.
Supporting German Language Development
Our library offers books for German as an Additional Language (DaZ), audiobooks, children's songs and interactive media that make learning German fun and engaging. It is also home to our Language Lab, a digital learning space where primary and secondary students can independently develop and consolidate their foreign language skills using language-learning apps, digital resources and multimedia materials.
Author Readings and Workshops
Well-known authors regularly visit German School Shanghai to read from their books and lead engaging workshops. Recent guests have included Michael Petrowitz, who captivated our young readers with an excerpt from Dragon Ninjas: The Dragon of the Mountains and a creative writing workshop. Our library team is always looking for new ways to bring literature to life and inspire children to explore stories creatively.
