School Sports Teams
German School Shanghai offers a diverse range of school sports teams across several disciplines. They give students the opportunity to develop their athletic skills, strengthen team spirit and gain valuable competition experience. Whether playing for fun or striving for sporting excellence, students benefit from a supportive environment that values enjoyment and performance alike.
Team Sports Across Seven Disciplines
Go Sting Rays! Competitive Swimming at DSS
In both primary and secondary school, our swimming team, the “DSS Sting Rays”, trains in partnership with our long-standing partner Multisport. With around 180 swimmers, the team competes in approximately ten ability-based meets each school year, taking part in ESC and SSL competitions at our own swimming pools and at other schools across Shanghai, where they compete against international school teams.
Our swimmers train in mixed-age groups across two teams. The SSL team caters to intermediate and advanced swimmers and takes part in around five school competitions each year. The ESC team welcomes both beginners and more experienced swimmers, competing in four ESC rounds annually. Training takes place two to three times a week. Our Development League also offers an accessible entry point for anyone interested in joining the team.
Our Gymnasts – Strength, Elegance and Precision
Around 100 students from Grades 1 to 12 train twice a week in age- and ability-appropriate groups, also working with our partner Multisport. Training develops skills in jumps, turns and balance while improving strength, flexibility and coordination. Students work towards routines featuring elements such as straddle jumps, one-arm cartwheels, handstands and, of course, the splits.
Our teams regularly compete against international schools in Shanghai and take part in regional competitions, including events hosted by the German Embassy School in Beijing. Competing at different levels and across various disciplines, students demonstrate their skills before professional judges in events such as floor exercise, uneven bars, balance beam and vault.
Basketball Training with the FALCONS
At German School Shanghai, our basketball teams train under the guidance of our partner, the FALCONS, one of China's leading basketball clubs. Training takes place once or twice a week, and our boys’ and girls’ teams compete in SISAC Cup tournaments in Shanghai as well as events outside the league. One of the highlights of the year is the PASCH Cup.
The PASCH initiative connects more than 2,000 schools worldwide, including German schools abroad and schools that teach German as a foreign language and maintain close ties with Germany. At the PASCH Cup, around 20 teams from schools in Shanghai and the surrounding area compete against one another. The event combines opportunities for cultural exchange with professional basketball training and exciting matches.
Our Volleyball Teamss
Whether competing in the SISAC League or taking part in tournaments outside the league, our girls’ and boys’ volleyball teams demonstrate commitment and genuine team spirit. They train once a week, focusing on technique, tactics and the shared goal of improving with every session.
Table Tennis
Our table tennis team continues to grow, with around 60 primary and secondary school students currently taking part. They train together once a week, developing their technique, improving their reaction times and strengthening team spirit as they work towards competing at a higher level.
