A Day at the German School Shanghai Kindergarten

Tailored to Every Child’s Age and Stage of Development

From nursery through to preschool, we follow a weekly schedule tailored to the children’s ages and developmental needs. It combines familiar, recurring routines with a variety of changing activities and learning opportunities guided by the Berlin Education Programme. These include sports days, library days and the children’s much-loved backpack or excursion day. Each group plans its excursions individually, often linking them to current projects and topics of interest. Destinations might include a picnic in the park, strawberry picking at a local farm, a trip to the zoo or visits to the local fire station, a dentist or a museum. The preschool schedule also includes structured learning sessions to prepare children for primary school, as well as a regular swimming lesson.

Welcoming the Children and Morning Circle

The Kindergarten day begins with drop-off from 7:45 am. The school buses arrive around the same time, and our team welcomes the children and accompanies them to their groups. After some free play, the groups come together for their morning circle from 9:00 am, marking the start of the day.

Sharing Meals

All groups have breakfast in their group rooms, or outdoors when the weather and season allow. Preschool children eat in the canteen at pre-arranged times, helping them prepare for the transition to primary school. In the afternoon, the children enjoy a substantial snack before the buses depart or they are collected by their families.

Plenty of Time for Free Play

Whether painting, crafting, doing puzzles, building with Lego or wooden blocks, engaging in role play or letting off steam on the playground, children have plenty of opportunities for free play every day. Our varied activities encourage self-directed learning based on each child’s individual interests and preferences.

“Good Morning, Little Butterflies!”

Caroline takes us along for a week in her life as a preschooler at the German School Shanghai Kindergarten. She shares insights into the daily routine, special creative activities and the sports programme, gives us a glimpse of an English lesson and reveals her favourite day of the week.

A Look Inside Our Kindergarten Facilities

Our Eurocampuses offer children a wide range of opportunities to play, explore and discover. From age-appropriate group rooms and spacious outdoor play areas to engaging hands-on science activities and a modern swimming pool with a dedicated learner pool, our facilities provide an inspiring environment for early learning and development.

A Weekly Schedule from Nursery to Preschool

Our daily routine follows a structured weekly schedule tailored to the needs of each age group. Consistent routines help children feel secure and confident throughout the day. After drop-off from 7:45 am, we start each day with breakfast together, followed by morning circle time. The morning programme varies throughout the week and covers different areas of the Berlin Education Programme, including physical activity, language development, free play, library visits and excursions. After lunch at around 11:30 am, children have time to rest or sleep. The afternoon offers plenty of opportunities for free play and self-directed learning. For preschool children, the weekly schedule also includes structured learning sessions. After a nutritious snack, children are collected from 2:50 pm or take the school bus home. Those who stay for the optional, fee-based After-School Club can enjoy a varied programme of activities until 5 pm. Children are also encouraged to actively shape their daily experience at kindergarten through regular children's meetings and larger children's conferences.

Exploring the World on Backpack Day

Once a week, it’s Backpack Day! These excursion days give children the freedom to play in nature, explore the neighbourhood around the school or investigate a particular topic, such as dental hygiene or growing vegetables. Take a look at one of our visits to the nearby Forest Park!

Our Afternoon Activities

As part of our full-day programme, children aged three and above can take part in a variety of fee-based afternoon activities until 5 pm. Options range from early music and creative development to exciting sports activities. Find out more about our After-School Club!

Staying Active Together at the Weekend

Our youngest learners can also enjoy sports and recreational activities with their families at the weekend through our Family Club. Every Saturday morning, children have the opportunity to develop their skills through activities such as ballet, swimming and football.
