Officially Recognised and Multiple Award-Winning
The German School Shanghai is one of the largest German schools abroad worldwide. It is officially recognised by the Federal Office for Foreign Affairs and the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany. Since 2011, DSS has held the Excellent German School Abroad quality seal. Since 2012, the school has also been authorised to award the prestigious CertiLingua Excellence Label. In addition, DSS received the STEM-Friendly School certification in 2012, 2015 and again in 2025, recognising its commitment to mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. The school was also recognised for its commitment to digital education in the 2024/25 school year.
Outstanding teaching and school quality
Following a successful Federal-State Inspection (Bund-Länder-Inspektion, BLI), DSS has held the Excellent German School Abroad quality seal since 2011. Awarded by the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad (ZfA), this seal recognises the high quality of teaching and education at German schools abroad. Schools undergo regular re-evaluations and receive ongoing support in their continuous quality development. For its current school development cycle, DSS has identified three key priorities: digital transformation, individualised learning and language development. DSS was recognised as a fobizz School in both the 2024/25 and 2025/26 school years for its commitment to digital education and the development of digital skills. Alongside integrating digital tools into teaching and learning, we focus on providing students with practical knowledge in artificial intelligence, media and IT. Through a wide range of initiatives, we actively promote digital literacy and empower students to navigate an increasingly digital world.
Shaping and Developing Our School
The Steering Group is an open forum for dialogue and collaboration within the DSS community. Meeting six times per school year, it brings together different perspectives from students, teachers, parents, staff and both campuses to explore, better understand and further develop the various aspects of school life. Its aim is to foster mutual understanding across the school community and develop well-founded proposals and recommendations for school development. In this way, the Steering Group provides an opportunity for everyone to play an active role in shaping the future of DSS.
