School Association & School History

Dedicated to Excellence in German Education in Shanghai

The Board of the German School Shanghai Association represents the association as the governing body of the school. We establish the strategic and financial framework for our outstanding German school abroad, with two campuses in Shanghai, where students can earn recognised German school-leaving qualifications that open up a wide range of educational and career opportunities worldwide. As volunteers, we take responsibility for key areas and set the strategic and financial direction for both campuses in close collaboration with the school leadership and administrative teams. Our Board members bring a broad range of expertise in strategy, finance, construction, marketing and communications, law, government relations and human resources. We put this expertise to work to promote excellent German education in Shanghai, both today and for generations to come.

Our School History

At the start of the 2025/26 school year, German School Shanghai Hongqiao and German School Shanghai Yangpu merged to form German School Shanghai. The school opened a new chapter in its 30-year history, guided by its mission statement: “Exploring Together. Growing Securely. Shaping Worlds.” In addition, German School Shanghai received the “MINT-Friendly School” award for the third time, recognising its commitment to excellence in mathematics, informatics, natural sciences and technology (STEM).

The façade in Yangpu has been given a fresh new look, and the swimming pool is opening its doors. In Hongqiao, science classrooms, Kindergarten sleeping rooms and study rooms are being renovated. School buses now feature the new Eurocampus design.

Alongside the Swiss educational programme, Spanish is introduced as a second foreign language at German School Shanghai Hongqiao, alongside French and Latin. The “Atelierzeit” programme becomes part of the full-day school structure at the Hongqiao Campus, and the “Family Club” is launched.

The German as a Foreign Language (DaF) programme is launched as an extension of the German as a Second Language (DaZ) programme. Despite the pandemic, lessons continue seamlessly online, and students successfully complete their final examinations.

Under the school motto "Daring together. Growing securely.", the mission statement of the Hongqiao site is revised and adopted.

The Eurocampus in Yangpu opens on January 8. After school closures due to the coronavirus, all classes and groups return. All final exams are passed successfully. The DSS celebrates its 25th anniversary.

On 20 January, the school community celebrates the topping-out ceremony at Yangpu. At the Hongqiao Campus, the first cohort of the Fachoberschule (FOS) graduates, and the third FOS class begins its studies in August.

The winner of the architectural competition for the new Yangpu Campus is announced. On 3 December, the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of construction.

In 2015, the German School Shanghai Association celebrates its 20th anniversary. What began as a small primary school in 1995 has grown over two decades into one of the world’s largest German schools abroad, with two campuses. The school’s mission statement, “Belonging. Building Community. Discovering the World”, is adopted at the German School Shanghai Pudong Campus, and the Eurocampus is once again recognised as a “MINT-Friendly School” for its commitment to mathematics, informatics, natural sciences and technology (STEM).

German School Shanghai Pudong receives the “Excellent German School Abroad” seal of quality, and the site for the future Yangpu Campus is acquired. The first Realschulabschluss and Abitur certificates are awarded in Pudong.

A new library building with over 1,000 m² and an administration wing is being built on the Eurocampus. New premises and its own canteen are built in Pudong. The Eurocampus receives the CertiLingua label of excellence and is recognized as a "STEM-friendly school". A separate yearbook is published for each location for the first time.

DSS presents itself for the first time at the didacta education fair in Hanover. The campus in Pudong becomes an independent school, both locations remain under the school association.

The first German International Abitur examinations with subjects taught in English, Geography and History, are held. In October, the school reaches the milestone of 1,000 students, including 200 at the Pudong Campus. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, the school receives the “Excellent German School Abroad” seal of quality. The swimming pool at the Hongqiao Campus also opens.

A library opens at the Pudong Campus. At the Eurocampus in Qingpu, the first independent cohort of Realschule students completes the Mittlere Reife. The vocational college programme is also launched in cooperation with the German Chamber of Commerce Abroad.

On September 3, around 60 children move into the newly opened campus in Pudong with kindergarten, primary school and grades 5 - 6. The Fine Arts Center opens at the Eurocampus and the mission statement "Daring together. Growing securely." and the school logo are introduced.

The first Abitur class takes its exams in spring 2005. Following recognition by the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs, the DSS now runs from kindergarten to the Abitur. The new Eurocampus is occupied in September and officially opened on November 19.

The foundation stone for the Eurocampus in Qingpu is laid on June 19, 2004. The interior work begins in November and by the start of the 2004/2005 school year, over 500 children are attending the school.

At the beginning of the 1997/1998 school year, the DSS becomes a foreign school sponsored by Germany. As the school continues to grow, it moves into a converted printing building on Jin Hui Lu, which also provides space for a music room, a gym, a laboratory and a canteen.

In September 1996, the German School Shanghai moves into several residential buildings in the New Asia Rainbow Garden Compound, which continue to be used jointly with the French school. There are now 29 students studying at all levels and the kindergarten looks after 28 children. A library with German books is also set up.

On September 4, 1995, the German School Shanghai opens its doors for the first time. In a villa in the park of the Cypress Hotel, two teachers teach four students in so-called living room classes. This start was made possible by the founding of the private school association Deutsche Schule Shanghai e. V. on January 19, 1995 as the sponsor of the educational institution and the decision to cooperate with the French school, which continues to this day.
