A Comprehensive Approach to Digital Media Education

Learning, Growing and Creating with Media

At the German School Shanghai, we see digital media education as an essential part of modern learning. Our aim is to equip children and young people with the skills to use digital media creatively, critically and responsibly – in their learning, in everyday life and in an increasingly connected world. For us, digital media are not an end in themselves, but tools for participation, expression and individual learning. From kindergarten through secondary school, we guide our students in developing digital skills, finding their bearings in a changing world and actively shaping the digital future.

Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom

We see artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool that can support learning and open up new possibilities. Its use at the German School Shanghai is guided by our educational objectives, the developmental stages of our students, and applicable data protection and ethical requirements.

Developing Skills Step by Step

AI is introduced gradually and in an age-appropriate way. In primary school, the focus remains on building fundamental reading, writing and numeracy skills, with AI applications used selectively to provide additional support. From lower secondary onwards, students learn to use AI purposefully under the close guidance of their teachers. In upper secondary, they further develop their skills and increasingly use AI independently and responsibly across different learning contexts.

Using AI Responsibly

We use AI where it offers clear benefits for learning and supports our educational objectives. Its use is guided by educational principles, with particular attention to data protection, transparency and ethical considerations. We use only platforms that comply with both the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the applicable legal requirements in China.

Adding Value to Learning

AI enables more personalised learning, supports participation in the classroom and creates new opportunities for differentiation. Our aim is to equip students to use artificial intelligence competently, productively and critically. In doing so, they develop essential future-ready skills to navigate and help shape an increasingly digital world responsibly.

Prevention and Media Literacy

Promoting responsible digital media use is an integral part of everyday school life. Through our “Social Networks – Mindful and Self-Aware” programme in Grade 8 and the regular exploration of digital media topics across different subjects, we strengthen our students' digital literacy. We deliberately do not use social media as part of our school activities. In addition, we offer information sessions and prevention workshops for parents, helping them guide and support their children in the digital world.

Smart Choices in Everyday School Life

The German School Shanghai is a place for learning and personal development, where concentration, face-to-face interaction and collaborative learning take centre stage. That is why our school is generally smartphone-free: personal smartphones and comparable smart devices are not part of everyday school life during the school day. This approach protects learning time, encourages social interaction and creates space for a more focused school experience. At the same time, our dedicated Digital Lounges provide designated areas where students may use their personal smartphones and practise doing so thoughtfully and responsibly. Students can refer to the applicable rules in their classrooms at any time.

Prevention & Counselling

Our school social work team provides a trusted point of contact for students facing challenges at school or dealing with everyday worries. They offer guidance, encouragement and support, helping children and young people develop personally and socially.
