Clubs & After-School Programme

Discover Interests. Develop Talents.

Our extensive range of extracurricular clubs complements classroom learning and gives students opportunities to explore their interests beyond the curriculum. In addition, kindergarten and primary school children can take part in our fee-based Afternoon Club, which runs from Monday to Friday.

A Wide Range of Activities

With around 300 activities available from kindergarten through secondary school, children and young people can pursue their interests, discover new passions and develop their talents.

Part of the Full-Day Programme

Extracurricular activities take place after the regular school day, from 3 pm onwards. Primary school students also have a dedicated club session built into their daily timetable after the lunch break.

New Choices Every Semester

At the beginning of each school year and again at the start of the second semester, students can choose from our wide range of clubs and fee-based afternoon club activities. Courses can be selected and booked through our parent portal.

Celebrating Sporting Achievements

Sport plays an important role in the diverse extracurricular programme at German School Shanghai. Alongside our successful school teams, particularly in football and swimming, students can choose from a broad range of sporting activities. Options include athletics, fencing and jiu-jitsu, as well as strength training, kung fu, yoga, climbing, hockey, ballet, cheerleading, modern dance and K-pop.

Success Through Teamwork

Our many school sports teams train regularly in their respective disciplines, including football, swimming, volleyball, artistic gymnastics, basketball, badminton and table tennis. They represent German School Shanghai with commitment and enthusiasm at regional and national competitions.

Black and Yellow Football Training in Shanghai

Since 2018, we have maintained a close partnership with German professional football club Borussia Dortmund. As a BVB Youth Development Partner, we offer football enthusiasts at German School Shanghai training based on the playing and coaching philosophy of this leading German club.

K-Pop, Hip-Hop, Ballet and More

Our dance clubs offer something for everyone. Primary school students can choose from pop dance, Zumba, modern dance, Chinese dance and Dance & Fun, while K-pop takes centre stage in secondary school. These clubs encourage physical activity, develop a sense of rhythm and foster teamwork. They also give students regular opportunities to showcase their skills at school events, including the annual Eurocampus DanceFest.

Creativity in Action

Students can explore their creative side through a wide range of music, arts and crafts activities. They can perform in the school orchestra, big band, choir or one of our many school bands, or learn an instrument and develop their musical skills at our school’s own music school. The drama club gives students the chance to gain stage experience, while the school newspaper and film club provide opportunities to turn their ideas into articles, photographs and films. Those who enjoy hands-on activities can get creative through arts and crafts, sewing, pottery, set design or woodworking, bringing their own projects to life.

Our Own Music School

Children can begin learning an instrument at our school’s own music school as early as kindergarten age. From saxophone, flute, drums, trumpet and trombone to piano, violin, cello and guitar, our qualified music teachers support young musicians as they develop their skills and discover their musical potential.

More Clubs to Explore

Inspiring Innovation

Build robots, learn to code, experiment with 3D printing, bring projects to life in our MAKERSPACE, explore artificial intelligence or discover virtual worlds with VR. Our clubs introduce children and young people to technology and science in a fun, creative and hands-on way.

Learning Languages

From Cambridge English exams and HSK certification to Chinese, French and Spanish courses, our clubs give students the opportunity to learn languages, strengthen their skills and work towards recognised qualifications. English-language clubs and drama projects further help students develop their language proficiency.

Making a Difference

At German School Shanghai, community spirit, mutual support and solidarity are values we actively put into practice. Through fundraising campaigns, book fairs and initiatives such as Art for Charity, our school community supports a range of organisations, with a particular focus on helping children in need.

Think Globally

Through Model United Nations (MUN) and Youth Debates (Jugend debattiert) students learn to articulate their positions, present convincing arguments and put their skills into practice at competitions, including MUN conferences and Jugend debattiert finals. These activities foster teamwork, critical thinking and intercultural understanding.

Flexible Afternoon Club

Our Afternoon Club is available to kindergarten children in the regular groups and primary school students who would like to extend their school day. Families can choose the options that best suit their needs, with flexible booking available for individual days or the entire week. Each day brings a varied programme of activities, from sports and playful language learning to creative projects.

Our Full-Day Programme
