Sometimes, all it takes is a change of perspective to see the world in a new way.
At German School Shanghai, inclusion is an integral part of everyday school life. Children and young people with additional needs receive individual support tailored to their personal circumstances. At the same time, we want to raise awareness of diversity and participation beyond our school community. Because inclusion begins when people meet, discover different perspectives and are willing to see the world through someone else’s eyes.
This was at the heart of the Blind Ping Pong Showdown held last weekend. German School Shanghai has maintained a close partnership with the Hangzhou Para Blind Sports Club (Para Blind) since 2021. Two of our teachers have completed, among other things, training as Showdown referees. Today, DSS students can also take part in Showdown referee training as part of our extracurricular activities and ateliers.
During the event, participants had the opportunity to experience what it means to navigate without sight. Showdown – a sport specifically developed for people who are blind or visually impaired – requires concentration, careful listening, trust and spatial awareness. Through playing together, a sporting encounter became a unique experience that opened up new perspectives.
The event was organised by the Rotary Club of Shanghai, led by this year’s President Markus Wiegand, who himself has a close connection to DSS: his children attended German School Shanghai for many years. The event was supported by Mustard Tek, an organisation committed to inclusion, accessible design and collaboration with people with disabilities.
Our special thanks go to the 15 blind athletes from Para Blind, who not only introduced us to their fascinating sport, but also gave us valuable insights and opened the door to new perspectives.
Because inclusion begins with understanding. And understanding grows when people meet, share perspectives and see the world through different eyes.
