Every family has its own story. In this series, parents from our school community share why they chose the German School Shanghai, what their children gain from their education, and what they value most about the German school system.

Academic Excellence, Internationality, and a Strong School Community

The Bavarian Abitur is often regarded as one of the most academically demanding secondary school qualifications in Germany. Regardless of where one stands in that discussion, we noticed during our daughter’s university application process that the German International Abitur awarded by the German School Shanghai is considered equivalent to the Bavarian Abitur by prestigious universities such as the Technical University of Munich. In our view, this reflects both the high quality of education and the strong reputation of the qualification.

However, the quality of education is not only evident in the recognition of the diploma itself. We have always appreciated the school’s modern facilities, particularly in the areas of IT and digitally supported learning, as well as the individual attention students receive within their classes.

What impressed us most was the strong sense of community among the students. Many friendships and networks continue long after graduation and help ease the transition to university life. As parents, it is reassuring to know that our daughter can rely on a familiar network even in a completely new environment.

Another major advantage is the range of extracurricular opportunities, such as Model United Nations (MUN). These programs help students develop the ability to debate, represent their views, and speak confidently in front of others. In addition, the international environment has made our daughter more open-minded toward different cultures and has helped her adapt quickly to new social and academic settings.

From DSS to University: Navigating Study Choices

Our daughter’s choice of degree program was a natural continuation of the interests she developed during her final years at school: she decided to study Biochemistry.

When selecting a university, it is wise to consider several options in order to remain flexible. Munich offered excellent opportunities in this regard, as both LMU Munich and the Technical University of Munich are among Germany’s most highly regarded universities.

Why Practical Experience Matters: Reflections on Dual Study and Career Paths

The rapid developments in artificial intelligence are making educational and career choices more challenging than ever. This makes practical experience and application-oriented skills increasingly important.

Although I personally entered professional life through an apprenticeship at Siemens, today—provided academic performance allows it—I would particularly recommend a dual-study program in fields such as business, economics, or the social sciences. Dual-study programs combine academic learning with practical work experience in an ideal way and open up a wide range of career opportunities.

At the same time, vocational pathways in technical and skilled trades remain highly attractive and future-oriented educational options. They continue to offer excellent prospects and are paths I would fully support for my own children.

Enhancing Career Orientation Through Real-World Insights

With initiatives such as the Career Day, DSS already provides outstanding opportunities for university and career orientation. Students gain valuable insights into different industries, professions, and career paths.

In addition, I see significant potential for even closer cooperation between the school, companies, and the German Chamber of Commerce—particularly in supporting internships, organizing company visits, and facilitating connections with businesses and industry experts who can share first-hand insights into specific professions and career trajectories.
